Most reformer pilates studios require them and will not let you on the equipment without them. The reformer carriage and footbar are smooth surfaces and bare feet or regular socks can slip. Research published in Frontiers in Medicine found that grip socks improved balance scores by 23% among pilates practitioners. They are also a hygiene requirement on shared studio equipment.
Grip socks work well for barre, yoga, HIIT, weight training, and any workout where you want extra stability on smooth surfaces. They are also popular for wearing around the house, particularly on floorboards and tiles.
The reformer carriage moves under load and the footbar is a smooth surface. Without grip socks your feet can slide during footwork, lunges, and standing exercises which affects your form and increases injury risk. Most studios require them for both safety and hygiene reasons.
Regular socks have no traction on the sole so they slide on smooth surfaces like reformer carriages, studio floors, and yoga mats. Grip socks have a non-slip sole that keeps your feet stable during movement. They also tend to have arch ribbing which keeps the sock securely in place on your foot rather than slipping or bunching during class.
Three sizes are available. Small fits AU/US shoe sizes 5 to 7.5. Medium fits AU/US sizes 8 to 10. Large fits AU/US sizes 10 to 12. If you are between sizes we recommend sizing up for a more comfortable fit.
Soft breathable cotton with arch ribbing for a secure fit and a non-slip grip sole. The arch ribbing keeps the sock from slipping or bunching during class and the grip sole gives you traction on the reformer carriage, mat, and studio floor.
Machine wash cold inside out on a gentle cycle. Do not use fabric softener as it coats the grip dots and reduces traction over time. Air dry rather than tumble drying to extend the life of the grips.
Grip socks are widely used in hospitals, aged care, and post-surgery recovery. The non-slip sole reduces the risk of slipping on smooth hospital floors and they are far more comfortable than standard hospital socks. Any of our styles work well for this purpose.
